A sad day, one of my heroes has a pop - Marco van Basten slates Hammers

AC Milan and Holland legend Marco van Basten has slammed the Premier League for its lack of quality and tactics after watching recent games involving West Ham United and Southampton.
Writing for Voetbal International Van Basten said West Ham are one of the richest clubs in Europe, and are challenging for a place in UEFA competition, but their position surprises him because of the quality of their games. Van Basten compared West Ham’s recent performances to that of Southampton’s game with Sunderland in which he said there were no ideas, and technical players like Dusan Tadic and Jordy Clasie struggled to have an impact.
“West Ham United is currently still 5th in the Premier League and is in the top twenty of richest clubs in Europe. But when I look at those games (West Ham v Sunderland), I'm really surprised. At Southampton against Sunderland last Saturday it was really no different. Balls that are shot indiscriminately forward... no one comes up with ideas and takes the initiative. Even players like Dusan Tadic and Jordy Clasie did not succeed,” said Van Basten on the state of English football.
The comments are unlikely to go down well with both clubs, and especially with Southampton coach Ronald Koeman. The two players were teammates of the great Holland team which won Euro88, and the pair played for together for years in the national team. However, some might say Van Basten is diverting attention away from the state of Dutch football at the moment considering they failed to qualify for Euro16, and are no longer producing the talent of past decades.

He's onl seen Southampton Vs. Sunderland and us Vs. Sunderland yet Southampton and West Ham are technically rubbish? Perhaps the problem is that he saw both teams playing against Sam Allardyce's Sunderland!

Says a man famous for playing in a much richer club team along with Gullit & Rijkaard whose tactic was to score and then shut up shop and win 1-0. Dozy weak ankled clog wearer

He generally has a point . But you have to take into account that we're in a post-Allardyce season trying to change the playing style of the squad. In those terms we're well ahead of schedule.

The great total football Dutch side who all went along to Italia 90 in their prime years and ended up sat back at home watching the likes of Steve Bull, Paul Parker & Tony Dorigo work their magic

I don't understand the point he's trying to make. We've had some excellent performances this season so why not mention them?

I think he means that the premiership is more about physical stuff and not very technical.
I don't think that's wrong neither.

Celebrity ex-footballers are paid to give their opinions. They don't have to be considered opinions based on more than one game.
Money for old rope, that they're not going to turn down
